THE CHALLENGE THEME
March 2021 – This month’s challenge is all about creating an accessory for your smart home device.
There is no requirement to which smart home device you design for. Some popular examples include the Google Home Mini, Amazon Echo Dot, Apple Home Pod Mini, and more.
You do not need to own a smart home device, nor does your entry need to be 3D printed to enter. Only an original 3D model (created by you) is required.
Get started with any of these example ideas:
- a stand for the device
- a wall or ceiling mount for the device
- storage or concealing design
- turn the device holder into another function (i.e. plant holder)
- solve a problem with the placement of the product

- Build off the existing case – come up with your unique design!
- Submit your design!

SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Submissions will be accepted until Wednesday, March 31st, 2021 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.
HOW TO ENTER
- 3D Model your design in any program
- Create a free Thangs.com account
- Upload your model to Thangs, including the hashtag #PDOhomedevice in the model’s description
- Share your model on social media or in the PDO Community space.
There is no limit to the number of entries per contestant. Submit as many designs as you’d like!
WINNING CRITERIA
Kevin from Product Design Online, the Thangs team, and some Fusion 360 team members will vote and select the 5 winners.
Prizes will be given to the designs with the most votes based on the following criteria:
- is the design creative? (thinking ‘outside the box’)
- is the design unique/new? (original idea)
- does the design solve a problem? (i.e. hides the cord)
- does the design improve the product experience? (i.e. maks the speaker louder)
Winners will be announced on Monday, April, 5th, 2021 via this page and on the PDO Discord and the Product Design Online Facebook page.

FAQs
Who is the challenge for?
The challenge is open to everyone with access to 3D modeling software – it doesn’t have to be Fusion 360. You are welcome to share the challenge with your School, Makerspace, or other organization. Make it a friendly competition and challenge your friend!
Where can I ask for help?
Join the new PDO Community space on PDO Discord and post your questions, comments, share progress, and more in the #3d_modeling_challenge channel. Ask your questions, share progress, bounce ideas around, or simply stop by and say hello!
Does it cost anything to enter?
Nope! You can use any free modeling software. Solutions are uploaded to Thangs.com, which is also completely free. No payment is required to be eligible to win the 3D printer or other prizes.
Where do I submit my design?
All submissions should be uploaded to Thangs.com with hashtag #PDOhomedevice in the model’s description. This is required so Kevin can see all the submissions.
How much time do I need to allocate for the challenge?
Spend 15 minutes, an hour, or a day – This is up to you! You can submit one small design, multiple designs, or one time-intensive project.
Are there prizes to be won?
Yes! There are 5 prizes.

Do I need a 3D printer?
You’re encouraged to 3D print your design and share it with the community, but it is not required to participate or to win.
How often do you have these design challenges? I’d love to enter just not sure if I’ll have enough time to make something for this month unfortunately, I just found out about this.

We don’t have a set schedule, but we’ll likely do one every other month. When we did them back-to-back (each month), the participation was always lower and folks didn’t participate in all of them.
As long as you’re in the community space or like our Facebook page, you’ll get notified of any new ones.
