Special thanks to everyone who participated. We look forward to seeing your creative ideas in the next one! The August 2021 3D Modeling challenge is now live: 3D Modeling Challenge: DIY Back to School
1. Grand Prize – Sunflower Hand Fan
This is both a decorative and functional sunflower themed hand fan that I designed for the #pdo #summer 3D modeling challenge. Indiana summers can get quite hot, so having a collapsible fan in your bag can be a life-saver!
2nd Place – Pineapple Juicer
PineappleJuicer has 4 detachable parts: The top for cosmetic purposes, the lid, the juicer and the bottom that can be used as a cup.
3rd Place – Garden Fire Hose Full Nozzle Assembly
4th Place – Sunscreen Squeezer
Sunscreen is quite an essential part of summer and after a sunscreen tube is about 75% used, it becomes difficult to squeeze out more with hand.
That is why I’ve made a very simple, yet effective tool to squeeze as much sunscreen from the tubes as possible and ensuring it reaches where it needs to be.
Made it in the shape of the sun because why not XD… and also since that’s directly related to summer lol.
5th Place – Castle popsicle
Summers are for beaches. Swim in the sea, play with sand and lick the ice. I like all of these, so I got an idea to make a sand castle shaped popsicle. Fill up the mould, put the lid and stick and freeeeze.
6th Place – Life Preserver Drink Floaty Parts
This is a Pool Floaty in the shape of a life preserver to hold your drink in the pool. There are two parts in this design the cup holder and the floaty, this is done to better accommodate 3d printing capabilities. If I were to fully 3d print it, I would suggest painting it and then using epoxy as a seal, so that no water gets in the print. I also suggest using the loop on the bottom of the cup holder to tie on weight, (like rocks)so that the floaty always stands upright so your drink stays safe. Note the step file is a visible representation and should not be printed as it is. I didn’t know how to add an stl file and a step file on the same thangs design so the stl files are on a separate one called “Life Preserver Drink Floaty Parts.” Note the Floaty is one body and the cup holder is another so you will need to glue them together.
7th Place – Lifeguard Koozie System (LKS)
Allow me to introduce the only koozie specifically designed to keep you just as cool as your drink; the Lifeguard Koozie System (LKS).
The LKS is designed with simplicity, durability, and functionality as its key features. -Simple 2-piece interlocking design is easy to use and hard to lose! -Durable ASA Plastic body is Impact and UV resistant! -Functional Koozie keeps your drink cool even in the pool! The koozie can be separated from the floatation ring and used as a stylish standalone koozie.
The 3D printed prototype was drop tested 3 times from 6’ with a full can of seltzer. The LKS showed minor abrasions from impacting the concrete without any evidence of cracking.
A second test was conducted to demonstrate the insulative abilities of the koozie. See the photos in the ‘Community Uploads’ section for more info.
THE CHALLENGE
Summer is here! We’d like to see your best product inventions, innovations, and ideas that are related to solving a problem you have in the summertime.
We’re leaving this month’s theme “generic” and open to interpretation so you can be as creative as possible. We encourage you to work on a project that not only excites you but something you’ll be proud of.
Entries will be voted on by their creativity, uniqueness, ability to solve a problem, and the story behind them.
*your entry does not need to be 3D printed but should consider the limitations of various 3D printing methods and materials.
